East of England Plan > 2031 Scenarios for housing and economic growth

Planning for the future growth and development of the East of England is a major challenge.

Many important issues need to be considered such as the economy, housing, the environment, energy, waste, transport and the infrastructure to support new homes and existing communities.

Although we are in the midst of a recession, the economy and population of the East of England are still expected to grow significantly over the next twenty years.

Between 2011 and 2031, the region’s population is predicted to rise by over a million to almost seven million people.

New homes must be planned for so that first-time buyers, young families and others in housing need can buy or rent a home at a price they can afford.  Businesses need confidence to invest in the region and premises to grow and flourish.

This first stage of consultation is primarily about how much growth we should plan for in the East of England and where it should go.

It is part of a wider project to review the East of England Plan - which provides the framework for local plans.

Although there may be changes to the planning system in the years ahead, the evidence gathered will be valuable for the continuing need to plan for new jobs and homes.

The consultation is an opportunity to influence the choices that need to be made and ensure we plan effectively for the future needs of the people who live and work in the East of England.

We will listen closely to the arguments and evidence that are submitted.
